Care Guide for Cane Furniture

While the quality of the original craftsmanship is the primary factor in the longevity of caning, here are some maintenance tips to help ensure your piece lasts as long as possible.

🧹Regular Cleaning

  • Dust and Vacuum: Use a soft brush or vacuum on a low setting with a brush attachment weekly to remove dust and debris.

  • Spot Cleaning: For minor spills, gently dab the area with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking the rush/cane material, as excessive moisture can weaken the fibers.

🌞Environmental Considerations

While the quality of the original craftsmanship is the primary factor in the longevity of caning, here are some maintenance tips to help ensure your piece lasts as long as possible.

To keep your cane furniture strong and beautiful, give it a yearly treatment with a natural Danish oil (like Watco). This helps prevent the cane from drying out and breaking.

🧼Deep Cleaning

Mild Cleaning Solution: For a more thorough clean, mix a solution of water and mild detergent. Gently scrub the cane with a soft brush, then wipe with a clean damp cloth. Allow the chair to air dry in a well-ventilated area, avoiding direct sunlight.

Alternative Cleaning:

  • Mix lukewarm water with 10% white vinegar.

  • Apply with a soft brush, scrub gently, rinse, and dry.

  • The cane may lighten; optionally apply stain or wax to restore desired tone.

Odor and Stain Removal

  • Use a water and vinegar solution to clean affected areas, avoiding contact with metal or wood parts.

Important Things to Know:

  • Do not use baking soda for cleaning unless trying to tighten cane

  • Do not use linseed oil; it will warp the cane permanently.

🪑Dealing With Loose or Sagging Cane

For Slight Loosening:

  • Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with a bowl of lukewarm water.

  • Apply to both sides of the caning using a flat brush.

  • Wipe off, then let dry in a well-ventilated room.

For Severely Sagging Cane:

  • Wet the underside of the cane generously with boiling water using a sponge.

  • Let the piece dry naturally in direct sunlight or use a fan to speed up the process.

If the structure remains weak or the sagging is severe, it's time for a professional restoration. Embrace the philosophy of preserving rather than discarding—every piece can be revitalized.

🛡️Protective Measures

  • Use Chair Pads: Placing cushions or pads on the seats can distribute weight evenly and reduce wear.

  • Make sure your back pockets are empty.

  • Distribute Weight Evenly: Avoid kneeling or applying concentrated pressure to cane seats.

  • Lift, Don’t Drag: Always lift the chair by the backrest, especially if it is caned, to avoid loosening the structure.

  • Avoid Heavy Loads: Do not use caned furniture as a step stool or place heavy items on it.
